Where possible we aim to purchase timber flooring products which are independently certified as coming from well-managed forests by organisations such as the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) or Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC).  Where certified products are not available we will source materials from suppliers that are operating within the laws of the country of origin and in line with globally accepted environmental practices. 

Climate change is widely acknowledged to be caused by green house gas emissions and is now recognised by the scientific and environmental community to be one of the greatest threats to the future health of our planet. In the UK, the construction and operation of buildings is estimated to contribute as much as 50% of the nations' carbon dioxide (Co2) emissions. It is estimated that more than 20% of the world's oxygen is produced in the Amazon rainforest and uncontrolled de-forestation of this area is a major threat to our survival.

Wood floors are good for the environment despite a common misconception that the use of hardwood for flooring does harm to the world around us. Infact many alternatives such as carpets, linolum and ceramics use more energy in their production and release more Co2 into the environment than hardwood flooring. 

Not only does timber create less Co2 in production than other flooring materials it also acts as a carbon sink, locking in carbon thoughout it's life cycle. 1m3 of wood used as an alternative to other materials results in 0.8 tonnes of Co2 sequestration). As trees get older their ability to absorb Co2 declines. It is, therefore, important to harvest older trees and replace them with younger ones. This attracts the term, "sustainable or Eco-managed forestry".

Hardwood Floors are a timeless treasure for homeowners. Not only do they add beauty, character and value to your home they make financial sense too. Because solid and engineered hardwood floors can be re-sanded over and over again they can last anywhere from 50 to 250 years with the right treatment, much longer than any carpeted floor and this reduces environmental waste.

Much is made, and rightly so, of the health benefits of hardwood flooring. Carpets are ideal breeding grounds for Dermatophagoides Pteronyssinus, the European Dust Mite. Due to their very small size they are not visible to the naked eye but are second only to pollen in causing allergic reactions in people. Carpeting ages quickly with accumulated dirt and grime and may require expensive and potentially toxic cleaning treatments to extend its life. A real hardwood floor, unlike a carpet, will not absorb household odours, dust or mites and this will enhance the air quality in your home.
