The use of wood flooring in buildings goes back many centuries, our earliest multistorey buildings used wood as a flooring medium, even in the strongest Medieval Castle with metre thick stone walls. The supply of this material was relatively simple. It was usually growing nearby, generic hardwood trees were locally felled and hand hewn into support beams and primitive planking.

Modern Architects and designers continue to utilise natural hardwoods for floor coverings used in commercial buildings and home interiors. Individuality, durability and appearanceis sought for each project where wood flooring is considered.
 
Hardwood materials are increasingly sourced from remote forests situated around the Globe, sometimes to the detriment of the local environment. Oak and Walnut are still the favoured species during the design process, mainly for their colour variance and known performance characteristics. But there are many other lesser known species that offer a breath taking array of colours and grain structures that are suitable for manufacturing Hardwood Flooring.

Unusual species are often given a number of different names making them difficult to source. There’s the scientific name associated with the species classification, the familiar name used by the timber trade or local community and sometimes a trade name created by the Forest Products Community.

At Blue Evolution, we have amassed a dictionary of Wood Species which lists all three of these names and attempts to rationalise the terminology used in the Timber Industry, but it still lists over 5,000 species commercially available. This includes over 200 varieties of the Oak species or “Quercus” and nearly 30 species of Walnut or “Juglans”.

Multiply these numbers by the appearance grading for characteristics in any variety and the plethora of stains and finishes that can be applied to most hardwoods and you form a choice of over 1,000 Oak and Walnut Floors to choose from.
